Prostate Ultrasound

Prostate ultrasound is a diagnostic study that allows for the prostate to be imaged and measured by placing an ultrasound probe in the rectum.  This study is important when planning certain treatments for the prostate.

Indications

Procedure

Two hours before the procedure, the patient uses an enema to clean the rectum.  During the study, the patient lies on an exam table, and the ultrasound probe is placed into the rectum.  The prostate is then imaged and measured.

Side Effects

Patients may experience some discomfort when the probe is placed even though the probe does not go any farther than when a doctor performs a rectal exam.
