Cystoscopy with Retrograde Pyelogram (RPG)

Cystoscopy with Retrograde Pyelogram (RPG) is performed under local anesthesia and conscious sedation, while contrast is injected and an x-ray taken in order to image the ureter and kidney.

Indications

  • Hematuria
  • Hydronephrosis
  • History of bladder cancer
  • Ureteral stones
  • Ureteral stricture
  • Kidney stones
  • Flank pain

Procedure

The patient lies on an exam table on his back, and the opening of the urethra is cleaned, local anesthetic given and conscious sedation administered. A cystoscope is then placed into the bladder, and a small tube inserted into the opening of the ureter. An x-ray is then taken while contrast is injected into the tube in order to image the ureter and kidney. Depending on the reason for the procedure, a small sample of fluid may be taken or a ureteral stent may be placed.

Side Effects

Most patients will experience some slight burning with urination or pass a small amount of blood for the first 24 hours after the procedure. If the burning persists longer than 24 hours, or the patient has heavy bleeding or passage of clots, a fever over 101°, or is unable to urinate, please contact us.
